Graph Modeling-based vs. Term Store-based Tagging with Graphwise for SharePoint
09/06/2026
Graphwise for SharePoint enables users to tag content in SharePoint document libraries and lists using concepts from both Graph Modeling and Term Store. Graph Modeling tags are stored in multiple lines of text columns, while Term Store tags appear in dedicated Managed Metadata columns for each item.
Feature | Graph Modeling-based Tagging | Term Store-based Tagging |
|---|---|---|
Dependency | Can be used without Term Store-based tagging |
|
TipTo only use the Term Store-based tagging, hide the column with the Graph Modeling tags or disconnect the library or list from the Graph Modeling taxonomy (you can also select the option to preserve Term Store tags). | ||
Source of tags | Graph Modeling taxonomy or concept schemes | Term Store term group (must be an exact copy of the Graph Modeling project used for Graph Modeling-based tagging achieved using the Term Store synchronization feature; synchronization of GUIDs is not required) |
Storing of tags | Multiple lines of text columns | Managed Metadata columns |
Manual tagging | Tags can be manually added, deleted and marked as unwanted |
|
Tagging parameters | Can be set in the Graphwise for SharePoint Administration application | Inherited from the settings for the Graph Modeling-based tagging |
Use cases | Use tags to retrieve content in the Graphwise for SharePoint Search application | Use tags to retrieve content in the SharePoint-native search or to enhance third-party integrations |
